Remote Access

There are a variety of programs that you can use to remotely access your computer. Some of the most common include VNC and Microsoft's built-in Remote Desktop. I recommend TightVNC. While it is a good choice for your personal remote access needs, system administrators will find that it is great for use over their networks. It is free and available for multiple platforms and has proven to be very manageable.

If you are behind a firewall and for one reason or another do not have a dedicated port forwarded from the firewall to your computer for remote access, you would generally be out of luck. There is, however, hope with a product from GoToMyPC.com. This site allows you to access your computer across networks regardless of firewalls as long as you are able to access their site from both locations. Their software does this by maintaining a connection to their site and proxying the requests. They have personal to corporate plans and are reasonably priced for their service.
